Outdoor kitchen built into a hillside retreat
Why it works

Guests travel for what they can’t get at home.

Picking a fig off the tree before breakfast. A dinner where the herbs were cut an hour ago. A garden path laid out to slow people down. These are the moments guests photograph, tell friends about, and come back for.

A productive landscape gives a property its story and a real supply line: herbs and edible flowers for the kitchen and bar, botanicals for the spa, cut flowers for the rooms, and a place for events that no other venue has.

Four ways we work

Design, install, wellness, partnership.

Design

A master plan for the whole property: kitchen gardens sized to your covers and menu, orchards and berry walks, guest paths, event lawns, water capture, and phasing that works around your season.

Install

Our field team builds each phase under Dane’s direct oversight, scheduled around bookings and the off-season, in step with your architect, builder and food and beverage team.

Wellness

Healing and sensory gardens, walking paths, tea and medicinal plantings for the spa, and quiet places to sit. Designed so the landscape itself is part of the program.

Partnership

A long-term relationship after the install: seasonal stewardship, planting plans built with your chef, stock from our nursery, and guest programming such as garden walks and harvest dinners.

Who it’s for

Properties where the land is part of the stay.

Boutique hotels and inns

A kitchen garden and orchard that gives the property a signature, and the restaurant a reason to be on the map.

Wellness retreats and spas

Walking gardens, medicinal and tea plantings, and outdoor treatment spaces that extend the program beyond the building.

Farm stays and glamping

Working plantings guests can walk, pick and learn from, with screening and shade that make each site feel private.

Farm-to-table restaurants

Beds and perennials planned with the chef for the herbs, greens and edible flowers you use every week.

Wineries, cideries and breweries

Orchards, hedgerows and pollinator plantings that frame the tasting room and tell the story of the place.

Event and wedding venues

Ceremony gardens, arbors and sightlines that photograph beautifully and hold up to crowds.

Work

Two projects in this spirit.

A boutique retreat in Topanga, California. An Airstream rental and outdoor kitchen set in a drought-tolerant edible landscape, with stone meditation spaces. The grounds are the reason people book.

Walking gardens for wellness, Mid-Atlantic. A design-only plan layering medicinal plants, sensory rhythm and stormwater management, phased so the owner can build it at their own pace.

How engagements work

Start where you are.

First look

A 15-minute call, then an on-site walk in the DC area or a Remote Strategy from $1,500 for properties further away.

Master plan

The full plan for the property, from $15,000, with phasing built around your operating calendar.

Design and build

Design through installation from $30,000, with one accountable team on site.

Partnership

Stewardship and growing support by arrangement, season after season.

A short-term rental or a single guesthouse? Land that pays you back covers smaller hospitality properties.

Questions

Common questions.

Can you work around a property that is open to guests?
Yes. Installation is phased around bookings, events and the off-season, and each phase is planned so guest areas stay presentable while work continues elsewhere.
Can a garden really supply our kitchen?
It can supply a meaningful share of what a kitchen uses most: herbs, greens, edible flowers and seasonal fruit. We size beds and perennials to your menu and covers with your chef, so the harvest gets used rather than wasted.
Do you design for spa and wellness programs?
Yes. Walking gardens, sensory plantings, tea and medicinal beds, and outdoor treatment or meditation spaces, designed alongside your program rather than added afterwards.
Do you work outside Virginia?
Yes. We design on site in the DC area and remotely elsewhere; our retreat work includes a property in Topanga, California. Installation outside the region runs through vetted local teams.
What does a partnership include?
It is shaped to the property. Typically seasonal stewardship visits, a planting and harvest plan built with your chef, stock from our nursery, and guest programming such as garden walks or harvest dinners.
