Air Prune Bed Build Guide
Better roots, less transplant shock. Step-by-step plans for building an air-pruning propagation bed - the same setup we use in our own nursery to grow stronger, more fibrous root systems.
An air-prune bed uses exposed mesh or open-bottom construction so roots naturally stop growing when they hit open air, instead of circling endlessly the way they do in a solid pot. The result is a denser, more fibrous root mass and dramatically less transplant shock when a plant finally goes in the ground.
This is the exact bed design we use in our own nursery operation, scaled down into build plans for a home setup. You do not need specialized equipment, just basic carpentry tools and the specific mesh and framing dimensions that make the air-pruning effect actually work.

If you start seedlings, root cuttings, or grow out young trees before transplanting them to their final spot, an air-prune bed noticeably improves your success rate. This is the same infrastructure decision that improved our own nursery survival rates.
It requires a modest one-time build effort, basic carpentry skills and a weekend, in exchange for meaningfully healthier root systems on everything you propagate afterward.

This is a physical infrastructure build, not a planting guide - you will need basic tools and materials (lumber, hardware cloth or mesh) beyond the guide itself.
The bed size in the plans is adaptable, but the mesh specification and airflow principles should not be substituted without understanding why they matter for the air-pruning effect to actually work.
