Currants practically root themselves. Push a dormant hardwood cutting into moist soil in early spring, leave a couple of buds above ground, and most will take with no further help.

Within two seasons, a single cutting becomes a productive shrub. A bundle is the fastest, cheapest way to plant a currant hedge or a whole berry bed.

Our cuttings come from both black and red currant plants in our own stock.

Common questions

Before you plant.

  • Can I plant them straight in the garden?Yes. Plant cuttings about 6 inches apart in a nursery row or directly where you want the shrubs.
  • Can you ship to my state?Some states restrict Ribes. We check your state before shipping.
  • How soon will they fruit?Often lightly in the second year, and fully by the third.
  • Black or red?Both come in the bundle unless you ask otherwise. Black is musky and rich; red is bright and tart.

    What to know before you buy

    Plant cuttings as soon as the soil can be worked in early spring, with a bud or two above the surface.

    Keep the soil consistently moist through the first summer.

    Mulch well to hold moisture and suppress weeds around young plants.

    Move rooted plants to their final spots the following fall or spring, 4 to 5 feet apart.
