What to know before you buy
Gooseberry is self-fertile - one plant is enough to fruit. Some varieties carry thorns along the stems, which is worth factoring in if you are planting near a walkway or play area, though it also makes for an effective barrier hedge.
Consistent moisture produces better fruit size and flavor than a plant left to dry out repeatedly. Mulch helps retain soil moisture through the growing season.
