Wine Cap Mushroom Spawn
The easiest mushroom to grow outdoors. Mix it into wood chips and it fruits in your beds and paths while it builds soil.
Wine cap, also called the garden giant, is a large, meaty mushroom with a burgundy cap. It grows in fresh hardwood chips or straw, right in the garden, with no special equipment.
As it grows, the fungus breaks wood chips down into rich, dark soil. A wine cap bed in a garden path or under berry bushes feeds the plants around it.
Most beds fruit within a few months of inoculation, often in late spring and again in fall, and can keep producing for a couple of years if you top them up with fresh chips.

Mushrooms from
your garden paths.
Wine cap turns a problem into a crop. Every property generates wood chips, and wine cap turns them into both food and soil.
It is the mushroom we recommend first to anyone new to growing fungi, because it grows outdoors in ordinary beds with nothing more than chips, water and patience.
A shady wood-chip path between garden beds can produce mushrooms for years.

What to know before you buy
Spread fresh hardwood chips about 3 to 4 inches deep, layer spawn through them, and top with more chips.
Keep the bed moist, like a wrung-out sponge, especially in the first weeks.
Harvest young, before the caps flatten fully, and cook before eating.
Add a fresh layer of chips each year to keep the bed going.
