Blueberry Bush
Highbush blueberry selected for regional performance - one of the most consistently popular fruiting shrubs we grow, given acidic soil and the right companion variety.
Blueberry has one real requirement that determines success or failure more than anything else: acidic soil, ideally a pH between 4.5 and 5.5. Most Virginia soils run closer to neutral, so amending the planting site is usually necessary, not optional, for this specific plant.
Get that right, along with planting two different varieties for cross-pollination, and blueberry rewards you with reliable, heavy midsummer harvests and genuinely attractive fall foliage color as a bonus, one of the few fruiting shrubs that also earns its place as an ornamental.
Planting & Growing Information
Good company
for your blueberry bush.
Acidic soil
is non-negotiable.
We would rather tell you this upfront than have a blueberry planting underperform for a reason that was preventable. This plant needs genuinely acidic soil, a pH of 4.5-5.5, and most soil in our region does not start there naturally. Amending with sulfur or planting in a dedicated acidic bed is typically necessary, not optional.
Get the soil chemistry right and plant two different varieties for cross-pollination, and blueberry becomes one of the most reliably productive shrubs in our catalog, with the bonus of genuinely attractive red fall foliage that most fruiting shrubs cannot offer.
What to know before you buy
Test your soil pH before planting if you are not already gardening in an acidic bed. Mulching with pine bark or pine needles helps maintain acidity over time as the plant matures.
Consistent moisture matters more for blueberry than for most of our other fruiting shrubs - the shallow root system does not tolerate drying out well, especially during fruit development.
Planting a hedgerow, not a single bush.
We work with other nurseries and larger residential plantings on bulk blueberry orders. Availability is seasonal - reach out ahead of your planting window so we can plan stock around your order.
