One of the most important plants in a permaculture design - it attracts beneficial predatory insects, fixes nitrogen, and tolerates drought and mowing.
Yarrow does more quiet work in a landscape than almost any other plant we sell. Its ferny foliage and flat-topped flower clusters draw in parasitic wasps and other predatory insects that target aphids and caterpillars, functioning as a form of built-in pest management for everything planted nearby.
It also acts as a dynamic accumulator, drawing minerals up from deep in the soil and making them available at the surface as the foliage breaks down. Combined with genuine drought tolerance and a long history of medicinal use, this is a plant that earns its space many times over for very little input.

Yarrow is not primarily grown for looks or food, though it offers both. Its real value is functional - the flower clusters draw in parasitic wasps and other predatory insects that keep aphid and caterpillar populations in check on everything planted nearby, a genuine form of biological pest control that costs nothing to maintain.
It also pulls minerals up from deep in the soil profile and deposits them at the surface as its foliage breaks down, functioning as what permaculture designers call a dynamic accumulator. Combined with serious drought tolerance and tolerance of mowing, this is a plant built for orchard understories and meadow plantings alike.
What to know before you buy
Full sun is important for strong bloom - in shade, expect a sparser, less floriferous plant. Once established it needs essentially no supplemental water, even through a dry summer.
Yarrow spreads by rhizome and can be divided every few years if you want to expand a planting or share it elsewhere on the property.
