Figs are among the easiest fruit trees to propagate. A dormant hardwood cutting, kept in a damp medium somewhere warm, will usually root within a few weeks.

Our cuttings come from cold-hardy stock that has proven itself through Zone 7b winters, so the plants you root carry the same hardiness.

A bundle lets you grow several trees for the cost of one potted fig, or share plants with friends and neighbors.

Before you plant.

  • How do I root them?Place cuttings in a damp mix such as peat or coir with perlite, keep them warm, and wait for roots. We are happy to walk you through it.
  • When will a rooted cutting fruit?Often in its second or third year.
  • Which varieties are in the bundle?Cold-hardy selections from our stock. Ask what is available this season.
  • When do cuttings ship?Late winter, while the wood is dormant.

    Rooting cuttings is the oldest way to multiply a good fig, and one of the most satisfying garden projects there is.

    Because every cutting is a clone of its parent, what you grow is the same proven, cold-hardy fig we grow ourselves.

    It is the most economical way to plant a fig hedge or a small fig orchard.

    What to know before you buy

    Cuttings should go into rooting medium soon after arrival. If you must wait, keep them cool and slightly damp.

    Warmth speeds rooting. A spot around 70 to 75°F works well.

    Pot up rooted cuttings and grow them on in a sunny spot before planting out after the last frost.

    Give young figs winter protection for their first few years.
