Mulberry Tree
The most productive fruit tree you can plant for the least effort. Girardi dwarf stays manageable, Illinois Everbearing produces from June through August.
Mulberry asks for almost nothing and gives back more fruit than nearly any other tree we sell. Once established, it needs no spraying, minimal pruning, and no particular soil amendment to produce heavily every year. The main challenge most people face with mulberry is having more fruit than they know what to do with.
Illinois Everbearing produces over an unusually long window, June through August, rather than one concentrated flush. Girardi is a genuine dwarf selection that stays compact enough for smaller properties while still fruiting reliably. Either way, expect birds, pollinators, and your own family to be eating from the same tree simultaneously.
Planting & Growing Information
Good company
for your mulberry tree.
The tree that
takes care of itself.
If low effort and high yield is the goal, mulberry is hard to beat. It tolerates poor soil, needs no spray program, and shrugs off the kind of neglect that would stunt or kill most other fruit trees. This is the tree to plant if you want food production without a maintenance commitment.
The tradeoff is volume - a mature standard tree produces far more fruit than most households can use fresh. Dwarf selections like Girardi solve this by staying compact while still fruiting well, a better fit for smaller yards or anyone who wants a manageable harvest rather than a flood of it.
What to know before you buy
Mulberry is self-fertile - one tree is enough. Fruit does not ripen all at once, which spreads out the harvest but also means dropped berries can stain a patio or driveway if the tree is planted too close to hardscape.
Standard trees can reach 30-50 feet, so site them with mature size in mind. Girardi dwarf stays in the 6-10 foot range and is the better choice for most residential properties.
Planting a hedgerow, not a single tree.
We work with other nurseries, landscapers, and larger residential or farm plantings on bulk mulberry orders. Availability is seasonal - reach out ahead of your planting window so we can plan stock around your order.
